About me

Hi, I'm Glenn a 2nd year Engineering student studying at a university in the UK. This is a blog of my ramblings about moving out to live and work in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the next 12 months.

Like on Facebook.

Christmas and The New Year

A break from Exotic Holidays: Sepang Circuit, Home for Christmas and a Gangnam New Year.

To survive in the Post-Laos world a break was needed and it was thus that i found myself with a substantial wait until my next stint of Asian Travelling. For the purpose of this blog I'll try and cover some more ordinary day to day things that i got up to for a couple of months and how we pass the time while living in KL.

Avicii at the Kuala Lumpur Formula 1 Racetrack.

I'm pretty fucking ignorant when it comes to chart/dance/popular music by and large and so when we all bought tickets to go and see some guy called Avicii i had no idea what anyone was on about. Apparently one of the best DJ's in the world had managed to pass me by leaving my ignorance intact, but it sounded like a decent night and i signed on.

The Gun
Being a Saturday night and having just worked a full shift at site (6 days a week = bleurgh) the excuse to go out, have a few and sweat in the human sauna that is a concert was much needed. Thus a big group of us bundled into the Proton Sagas and headed down.

The gig was awesome, Above and Beyond were sick, Avicii got the crowd going and surprisingly i knew most of the songs anyhow. Beer was cheap, atmosphere was up there and yeah it was just a great night really.

Pizzed
The same week we also attend the opening of a bar where bottles of Heineken were 1 Ringgit each (20p) for the first 500 bottles. Chaos ensued as generally happens when me and Parkin get drinking together. Jagermeiste rand Tequila were bought, things got out of hand and i ended up with a headache to end all headaches.

Before going home we said goodbye to the 4 Malaysian interns we had been working with for the past 3 or so months as they had come to the end of the programme and were returning to University. JY, Nelson, Jeff and Haz: you're all great guys and i hope we keep in touch.

End of an Era.

We would however, meet again at the New Years Eve celebration (watch for the 3 guys doing the freestyle at the beginning of the video later on in this post)

Home for Christmas

Courtesy of my Grandma i flew back to the UK to spend time with the family for Christmas  Frankly i needed the break from work as the hours were starting to wear me down and it's silly how much i missed being able to sit around and browse the internet/ achieve nothing with my life for days on end.

Le Ice Skating (Notice the guy photo bombing in the background)

Seeing the family was great as was meeting up with friends that i hadn't seen in at least 6 months and some for a lot more. Days out to London, Ice Skating in Hyde park and watching a show (Woman in Black) at the West End, along with copious pub trips and an especially messy night out for Gledhound's and Louise's 21sts left me reeling for quite some time and was well worth it.

Finely enjoying a pint at the Sherlock Holmes Pub.
 Jesus Christ I missed Ale.
I've breezed through the 9 days or so i was back for, but a lot of the time i just enjoyed relaxing and having the option to go out or do sweet, sweet jack all.

Hyde Park (Winter Wonderland) looking very beautiful
London in the winter really does have a intoxicating mise en scene about it. Florescent multi-coloured Christmas lights surround you, mulled wine is served wherever you walk and the frosty breathe you exhale all help to create a feeling that sweeps you off your feet while conjuring up Victorian, Christmas Carol 'esque imagery.

Le Dibble and Sarah outside the ice rink.

And that's from someone who doesn't even like Mulled Wine, it's foul.

Covent Gardens looking very beautiful

Oh, the weather was a relenting smack in the face for about a week after i arrived. Why is the UK so grey and cold? Saying that i've missed my scarves and coat more than words.

New Years Eve - What the Fuck is my life

So i flew back one cold morning as my parents continued to worry about me and my Dad warning not to party to hard and go off the rails. During my time home i began to plan some travelling after my year of work finishes, culminting in finely booking his flights out and agreeing that we along with Ket and his mate will be hitting Vietnam for solid 9 days come July.

It was a 13 hour flight, i left about 11 am and arrived around 8 am. Any normal human being would have been completely shagged by this point, their internal body clock clutching at the rails as the last of the energy and comprehension gave way to the unrelenting urge to sleep. However, I was bound to another cause.

For the last 8 weeks myself, the other UK interns for my company and the other new members of staff had been practising a gruelling 2-3 times a week to commit a dance routine to memory  Trained by not one but 2 Choreographers we had been tasked with performing in front of the entire company (300+ people) on New Years Eve just before the clock struck midnight. We were the countdown, the wind up monkeys for the rest of the staff and if we fucked up we would never hear the end of it.

Braces N Bow Ties - Stolen from Emma

Although i had promised to practise, i had undertaken roughly 0 hours whilst at home and had nigh on forgotten about the whole thing. On top of that most of us were extremely rusty, Brad had gone home the same time as me, James, Aaron and George had gone to Thailand over the break, Keith and Tom to the Philippines and Emma to Singapore  Pooja had her family out and Mitchell had avoided the whole issue by taking 3 weeks of holiday with his Girlfriend and going on a mega tour round South East Asia the Bastard.

So, most of us were not prepared. I got back to the apartment, showered and headed straight back out with the guys and drove to the 5 star Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur where the company had hired out the ballroom. Instead of practising we wasted time in the hot tub, sauna, steam room and pool. I blagged our way into most of these by writing down a random room number on the entry form and on we went.

The Ballroom was huge
There was a professional film crew capturing the entire event, members of the staff providing entertainment in Guns n Roses tribute bands, playing odd Chinese instruments and a terrible, terrible Australian/ American comedian half of his head that seemed like a throw back from 60's backstreet comedy.

The Gang - Stolen from someone I guess

9 Course Meal - Stolen from Ket
I won't lie, it was great night although extremely weird for reasons i won't go into here. We all enjoyed it but it was akin to submerging yourself in the corporate juice and drinking deep until you can't stand. I'm not so big on the whole corporate vibe (Rage Against the Machine) but the free bar more than made up for it, although the 9 course meal was a let down.

Jubilation Post- Dance - Stolen from Aaron
I was lagging. My body was shutting down and my attention waning: causing me to almost fall asleep during the hours of presentation time and time again. I avoided the alcohol, trying to power through on caffeine and suddenly it was almost midnight and time to get on stage.

Party Rock and Gangnam style was a go, i had no idea what was the fuck was going on but the time had come: (Courtesy of Aaron for the Video, or whoever did this dodgy bit of filming with his camera)

The Gangnam was over, it was hilarious and the majority of the Chinese in the room were suddenly intensely inebriated. Notice how our perfectly timed dance routine awoke a tribal urge in the audience as they grabbed hold of each other and ran to the dance floor as fast as their legs would carry them. The night was a success.

With that worry over Tom cracked open his bottle of Jack Daniels, we hit the bar hard and enjoyed a silly few hours dancing with the staff to music far to Ghetto and explicit to be appropriate.

The night wrapped up and by the time i got to bed i had been awake over 40 hours. I was absolutely knackered. This probably played a large role in me getting intensely ill a few days later. This leaft me Chunder Dragoning and bed bound for about 3 days unable to get up without falling back down. But whatever.

Well, that was the last couple of months in brief, shortly after this a few of us travelled to India to frolic in more Waterfalls, conquer Mountains and bathe in Masala.

Suave is the word

In between this time i also wrote an interview on request for an Expat Blogging website which you can find here:

Until next time. Adios.
